San Angelo Colts News Release
AMARILLO, Texas - San Angelo had come all the way back from a six-run deficit, but the Colts couldn't get the last three outs. The Amarillo Dillas rattled off six runs of their own in the bottom of the ninth, rallying to top the Colts 16-15, in front 3,168 at the Dilla Villa.
With the Colts leading 15-10 entering the ninth, the first four batters reached against Ryan Mulle, with a two-run double by Josh Ashton chasing Mulle and sending the tying run to the plate against San Angelo closer Brian Daly (0-2). The righty's first pitch was crushed to dead center field for a two-run triple by Jonathan Reynoso. Keith Brachold followed with a double off the glove of third baseman Aaron Cone to tie the game. A groundout put the winning run at third, and after a pair of intentional walks, Justin Wenger hit one to first. Andres Rodriguez snared it but threw wildly to the plate, and Brachold scored to give the Dillas (9-5) the wild win.
San Angelo (7-8) had battled from behind after taking a 3-0 lead in the first, with starter Brandon Kling (subbing for Caleb Rodgers) allowing five runs in the second, a run in the third, and three more in the fourth. The Colts got single runs in the fifth and sixth to cut the lead to 9-5, and then threw up a five-spot of their own in the seventh, helped by two Dillas errors and a wild pitch. Cone also hit his first professional homer, a three-run shot, in the frame.
Amarillo responded in the bottom of the frame with a run to tie it, but San Angelo scored five more in the eighth to take what looked like a comfortable lead at the time, with another error helping out. Overall, the Colts scored nine unearned runs off four Amarillo errors, including all five runs allowed by reliever Jesse Rodriguez. Eric Smith (1-1) was the only pitcher for either side not to allow at least two runs, and fittingly he got the win by pitching a scoreless ninth.
San Angelo picked up 20 hits in the game, the second time the Colts have done so in a game this season. But they were outdone by Amarillo's 22, as every Dillas starter picked up at least a hit, including a pair of home runs by A.J. Johnson.
The Colts return to Foster Field on Friday, May 30 for a three-game weekend set against the Aces. The series opener at 7:05 p.m. on Friday features a Visor giveaway, sponsored by Budget Blinds.
