BOISE, ID (January 7, 2003) – The Idaho Stampede has signed former BSU standout center John Coker, the team announced today. The move, which is still pending league approval, would put Coker in a Stampede uniform in time for Wednesday's game against the Yakima Sun Kings.

"He'll give us another big body in the lineup," said Stampede head coach Rory White. "He has some NBA experience and he also gives us some mobility to where he can play outside, but also come inside and block some shots.

To make room for Coker in the lineup, the Stampede will waive forward Sharif Fajardo due to a pre-existing injury that has hampered his playing ability.

"I don't want to do it, but it's something that has to be done," said White of waiving Fajardo. "He's one of my original guys and he's a big part of this team, but when the doctor says he can't play, then he can't play.

A dominant center at Boise State University from 1991-95, Coker (7-foot-0, 245-pounds) tested with the Portland Trail Blazers before signing with the Phoenix Suns following his senior season. He finished his collegiate career as BSU's seventh all-time leading scorer (1,126 points), ninth all-time field goal percentage leader (.551) and 11th all-time rebounder (459). He was selected to the All Big Sky team in both the 1994 and 1995 seasons, becoming one of just four Boise State players to earn First-Team honors in back-to-back seasons.

Since his professional playing career began, Coker has also spent time with the NBA's Toronto Raptors, Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards and the Golden State Warriors. He has also played overseas with Ourense in Spain, and Viola Reggio Calabria in Italy. The Seattle native was a 7th round (95th overall) selection of the Chicago Rockers in the 1995 CBA Draft.

Coker and the rest of the Stampede play host to the Yakima Sun Kings Wednesday night at the Idaho Center in the first game of an important three-game home stand this week. Tip-off is set for 7:10 p.m.
