Jaxx drop third straight to Braves in final road game

PEARL, MISS. (SEPTEMBER 1, 2009) - The M-Braves (33-30) win their third straight over the Diamond Jaxx (34-31) on Tuesday night, 4-2, pushing the Jaxx into second place in the Southern League North. Edgar Osuna (4-3) becomes the 33rd lefty to beat the Jaxx this season dealing seven innings and striking out a season high, 10 D-Jaxx batters. Jason Heyward led the M-Braves offensively, driving in a pair, and finishing 3-for-4 at the dish. Nick Hill (5-6) suffers the loss but struck out a career high nine in five innings of work. Mel Stocker wrapped the final road game of 2009 with a 3-for-4 night at the plate, while Ezequiel Carrera and Jose Yepez registered two hit games.

After being held to just two hits on Monday night, Ezequiel Carrera smacked an infield hit to start the game on Monday night. Carrera advanced to second on an error by Ernesto Mejia and stole third base. With two outs, Travis Garcia drove home Carrera with a single, giving West Tenn an early 1-0 advantage.

The Jaxx added to their lead in the top of the third. Again, with two outs, Greg Halman doubled down the left field line and set-up an RBI single by Rich Poythress. The Jaxx led 2-0

The M-Braves struck back in the bottom of the third by plating three runs. With the bases loaded, Jason Heyward brought in Jose Camerana with an infield single. The next hitter, Ernesto Mejia plated Travis Jones and Brandon Hicks with a base hit putting the M-Braves on top for the first time, 3-2.

Jason Heward struck again for the M-Braves in the bottom of the fifth inning. Heyward braught in Brandon Hicks, who lead the inning with a double, from second to give the Braves a 4-2 edge.

Nick Hill (5-6) left the game after five innings on the mound Tuesday night and struck out a season high nine batters. Hill surrendered four runs (three earned) on seven hits and walked just two. The five inning outing by Hill was the shortest in his nine starts.

Braves starter, Edgar Osuna (4-3) struck out a season high 10 batters and earned his second win against the Jaxx this season. Osuna allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits. Relievers, Kevin Gunderson and Steve Marek (S, 2) combined to deal a shutout eighth and ninth to keep the Jaxx at bay and fall, 4-2.

The Jaxx will take on the Tennessee Smokies on Thursday night at Pringles Park. The Smokies lead the Jaxx by a game in the division. LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (2-3, 3.24) will deal for the D-Jaxx on Thursday night and RHP Christopher Carpenter (0-2, 4.28) will go for the Tennessee Smokies. The matchup with Tennessee will mark the first meeting between the teams since May 15th.
