Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Jamestown, NY - With the score tied at one in the fourth inning, the Jamestown Jammers scored five runs on five hits to pull away and eventually beat the Aberdeen IronBirds 8-3.
After Brandon Erbe and Luis Lebron pitched perfect first and second innings respectively, Matt Hobgood entered the game in the third. Viosergy Rosa greeted the former first-round pick by doubling off the left-center field wall. Pedro Mendoza then chopped a ball to second that Dudley Leonora could not field cleanly. With runners on the corners, Marquise Cooper singled to center, making it 1-0.
The IronBirds tied it up in the fourth. With two men down, starter Dejai Oliver surrendered an infield single to Austin Knight. Adam Davis was hit by a pitch and Leonora walked, loading the bases. Oliver was taken out in favor of right-hander Thomas Peale. He walked the first batter he faced, Kyle Hoppy, to score a run and knot the game at one.
The Jammers broke the game open in their half of the fourth. Terrence Dayleg reached on a leadoff single. Josh Adams doubled, putting runners at second and third. A wild pitch would score Dayleg and move Adams up to third. Kentrell Dewitt walked and stole second base. After Hobgood got Eddie Rodriguez to pop out, Rosa hit a two-run single, making it 4-1.
Jamestown wasn't done. Pedro Mendoza walked. Marquise Cooper grounded into a fielder's choice, putting runners at first and third base. After Cooper stole second, Ryan Goetz knocked in two runs with a single.
Hobgood left the game with two outs in the fourth. In 1.2 innings, he allowed six runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out one.
Jammers' DH Austin Barnes (1) blasted a solo homer to left in the seventh inning to make it a 7-1 game.
Jamestown tacked on one more run in the eighth when Viosergy Rosa (1) cracked a solo homer to deep right-center field. The IronBirds scored twice in the ninth, but it wasn't nearly enough. Peale (3-1) got the win after pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Hobgood (0-2) took the loss.
Game two of this series will be played Thursday night at Russell E. Dietrick, Jr. Park. Aberdeen will have the right-hander Mike Wright (1-1, 6.60) on the hill. He'll go up against fellow right-hander Matthew Neil (1-2, 3.13). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
