-SPIKES START SECOND HALF AT TRI-CITY: The State College Spikes begin the second half of the 2011 season tonight with the first game of a three-game series against the Tri-City ValleyCats at Joseph Bruno Stadium in Troy, NY. This will be the first time that the Spikes play a Stedler Division opponent this year. State College is 5-10 against Tri-City all-time, with a 2-4 record against them in Troy.

-LAST GAME: The State College Spikes got a three-run home run from Wes Freeman in the fourth inning to kickstart a back-and-forth battle, but in the end, Travis Taijeron's ninth-inning grand slam was the difference as the State College Spikes dropped a 9-5 decision to the Brooklyn Cyclones on Monday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Freeman went deep off of Brooklyn starter Carlos Vazquez on the first pitch he saw in the fourth to give State College a 3-1 lead. In the ninth, Taijeron sent a 2-2 pitch to the right field bleachers to clear the bases and make it 8-4, Brooklyn.

-BENEDICT LOOKS TO BRING ORDER TO MOUND: Right-hander Matt Benedict makes his eighth start of the season for the Spikes tonight. Benedict has a 3.68 ERA on the road in three starts this year, and has allowed leadoff hitters just a .167 average overall in 2011. A 30th-round draft pick out of Western Carolina in 2011, Benedict went 3 2/3 innings last time out against Mahoning Valley, allowed eight runs (six earned) on seven hits in a loss.

-VALLEYCATS GO WITH DUFEK FOR OPENER: Right-hander Jonas Dufek gets the ball for Tri-City this evening. Dufek has make seven starts so far this season, incuding one of only three complete games in the New York-Penn League this year. Like Spikes manager Kimera Bartee, Dufek is an Omaha native who went to Creighton University. The righty was selected in the ninth round of this year's draft by the Astros after pitching Creighton to the NCAA regionals.
