Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
BROOKLYN, NY - The Connecticut Tigers put an end to their four-game losing streak by taking down the Brooklyn Cyclones 9-6 on Wednesday night at MCU Park.
All nine starters got in the action with at least one hit, with Jeff Holm leading the way on a 3-for-5 night, including a homer and two RBI's. Holm was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Zach Maggard went 2-for-4 with three RBI's, while Tyler Collins went 2-for-5 with his first professional home run and two RBI's. The Tigers scored in six of the nine innings.
Connecticut got started in the second with a leadoff triple from Dean Green, followed by a Holm RBI single.
Brooklyn came back and took the lead on a Xorge Carillo two-run homer in the bottom of the second, but it was all Tigers the rest of the way.
The Tigers tied the game at two in the third on a monster shot from Collins. The homer cleared the bleachers in right field and landed near the ocean that sits beyond the right field wall, a long ball that many Cyclones workers said was the longest they had ever seen at MCU park.
Holm then slammed a solo homerun in the fourth to help the Tigers regain the lead. They would add a two-run double from Maggard in the inning to take a 5-2 lead. Connecticut scored a run in the fifth and two more in the seventh to take a commanding 8-2 lead.
Brooklyn threatened in the bottom of the seventh putting four runs on the board and cutting the Tigers lead to 8-6. However, the Tigers would tack on one more insurance run in the eighth frame.
The Cyclones put the Tigers win in danger in the ninth. They got the first two men aboard off closer Daniel Bennet and brought the tying run to the plate, but Bennett retired the next three batters, with two strikeouts, to end the game and nail down the victory.
Luis Sanz earned his team leading fourth win of the year working five innings and giving up just two runs on four hits and striking out six. Bennett picked up his eighth save of the year, which is second most in the league.
The Tigers will continue a three-game series against the Brooklyn Cyclones with game two tomorrow night.
First pitch is set for 7:00 PM.
