Rickles And Powers Lead Vermont To 4-1 Win At Williamsport

WILLIAMSPORT, PA --- Nick Rickles went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI singles and Brent Powers tossed five scoreless innings for his first win as the Vermont Lake Monsters opened a three-game series against Williamsport with a 4-1 New York-Penn League victory Wednesday night at Bowman Field.

Vermont scored one run on three hits in the second inning and two more runs on three hits in the fourth inning for a 3-0 lead. Chris Affinito and Dusty Robinson singled in the second to give the Lake Monsters runners on first and third with one out before a Rickles RBI infield single to short.

Affinito was hit by a pitch and Jordan Tripp singled with one out in the fourth before back-to-back RBI singles from Rickles and Sam Roberts gave Vermont a 3-0 lead. Rickles led off the ninth with his fourth double of the season and Roberts followed with an RBI single to center for a 4-0 Lake Monsters advantage.

Powers (1-2) allowed four hits with one walk and three strikeouts over his five scoreless innings for the victory. Ryan Hughes tossed a scoreless sixth and Nathan Kilcrease two shutout innings before the Crosscutters got their only run of the game in the ninth off Eric Potter. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with one out before Tanner Peters retired the final two batters on a sacrifice fly and strikeout for his eighth save.

Along with Rickles three hits, Roberts went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Jordan Tripp was 2-for-4 with a run scored for Vermont (20-17). Kelly Dugan and Harold Martinez both had two hits for Williamsport (20-19), while Colin Kleven (2-3) gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits over four innings for the loss.

The Lake Monsters and Crosscutters continue the series at Williamsport on Thursday at 7:05 pm. After another single game on Friday in Pennsylvania, Vermont returns to historic Centennial Field on Saturday to begin a seven-game homestand against Brooklyn and State College.
