Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp Game Notes, June 13 at Birmingham

June 13, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp play at the Birmingham Barons in Thursday's 8:05 p.m. ET contest. RHP Jorge Guzman (2-6, 3.93 ERA) starts for the Shrimp against Barons LHP Tanner Banks (1-3, 3.00 ERA). Coverage begins at 7:50 p.m. on MiLB.tv, Sunny 102.3 FM and TuneIn.

JUMBO SHRIMP NIPPED BY BARONS 1-0

The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp took a perfect game into the eighth inning on Wednesday only to fall to the Birmingham Barons 1-0 at Regions Field. Gavin Sheets, who was pinch-ran for by Ramon Torres, and Yermin Mercedes each walked to begin the eighth. After a strikeout, Luis Gonzalez singled in Torres for Birmingham's only hit and the game's only run. Zack Burdi then hurled a scoreless ninth for his third save. In a spot start, Kolton Mahoney pitched six perfect innings, striking out five. Bryson Brigman notched a pair of hits in the effort for Jacksonville.

PITCH (ALMOST) PERFECT

Right-hander Jordan Yamamoto was promoted Wednesday to Miami, leaving a void in the Jumbo Shrimp rotation. Jacksonville manager Kevin Randel tabbed Kolton Mahoney to start on three days' rest in Birmingham, and the former BYU Cougar responded with a spectacular performer. Mahoney fired six perfect innings with five strikeouts. Brett Graves tossed a scoreless seventh before finally giving up a hit with one out in the eighth inning - matching the 7.1 no-hit frames Yamamoto and Jeff Kinley teamed to throw on May 20 against Montgomery for the Jumbo Shrimp's longest no-hit bid of the season.

FORTUNE SHOULD FAVOR THE BOLD (CITY)

Throughout every level in the history of baseball, nearly every team can expect to go about .500 in games decided by one or two runs. However, the Jumbo Shrimp have gone a combined 9-26 (.257) in games determined by two runs or fewer, including a stunning 0-12 in contests decided by precisely two tallies. In fact, Jacksonville has lost eight of their last 10 affairs decided by no more than two runs.

IT'S NOT HOW YOU START

In the first 20 games of the season, Jacksonville starting pitchers compiled a 3-13 record and 5.44 ERA over 91.0 innings. Jumbo Shrimp lid-lifters combined for 49 walks (4.8 BB/9), 89 strikeouts (8.8 K/9) and 91 hits allowed (9.0 H/9). However, the Jumbo Shrimp have seen some stellar starting pitching over the last 46 games. During this stretch, Jacksonville starters have combined for a 2.76 ERA (82 ER in 267.1 IP). Jumbo Shrimp starters have walked 76 (2.6 BB/9), fanned 222 (7.5 K/9) and yielded 213 hits (7.2 H/9).

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

Jacksonville suffered their 17th shutout loss in a 1-0 defeat on Wednesday at Birmingham. Those 17 blankings are by far the most in all of Minor League Baseball; in fact, only two other squads out of the remaining 119 MiLB teams have even compiled double-digit shutout stumbles, with the Jumbo Shrimp dwarfing the 11 collected by High-A Florida (Atlanta Braves) and 10 from Double-A Bowie (Baltimore Orioles). Jacksonville's 17 zeroes are also the most in the Southern League since Jackson tallied 21 blankings in 2015. The Jumbo Shrimp are just eight shutout losses away from tying the league record of 25 set by Asheville in 1970 and more than halfway to the major league record of 33 totaled by the 1908 St. Louis Cardinals. In addition to 17 games without plating a run, Jacksonville has scored just one run in 10 other contests.

ONE STEP FORWARD, TWO STEPS BACK

The Jumbo Shrimp won seven of 10 games from May 23 through June 2, the club's best 10-game stretch of the year. However, Jacksonville has followed that up with eight losses in their last 10 contests to push their record to 25-41 - the most losses the club has ever suffered in a first half in recorded club history (through 2005). Two more defeats would seal Jacksonville's worst record in any half in recorded club history. The Jumbo Shrimp's 27-42 (.391) mark in the second half of last season is currently the club's worst since at least the 2005 campaign.

ARMS RACE

Jumbo Shrimp catchers have been a crucial element to a strong defense throughout the 2019 season. The club's backstops have caught 39 men stealing, tops in Double-A and second in all of Minor League Baseball behind the Modesto Nuts' (High-A, Seattle Mariners) 41. Jacksonville's 43.8 percent caught stealing rate ranks fourth in Double-A. Individually, Santiago Chavez leads Double-A and places sixth in the minors with 23 runners caught stealing in just 41 attempts (56.1 percent).

SHRIMP SKEWERS

Four of Jacksonville's eight losses in June are courtesy of the opponent scoring the winning run in their last at-bat... Jordan Yamamoto went seven scoreless in his MLB debut.
