Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Despite a three-hit night from Nick Madrigal, the Birmingham Barons (27-39) fell to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp by a 3-1 final Thursday night at Regions Field.

Madrigal, who recorded his fifth multi-hit effort in seven games with the Barons, singled in the first, doubled in the fourth and singled once more in the sixth. The White Sox No. 4 prospect also scored Birmingham's lone run and picked up his fifth stolen base of the season.

Madrigal came across to score in the fourth after a bunt single from Luis Basabe moved him to third and Gavin Sheets reached on a fielder's choice.

However, Birmingham could not string together enough offense against Jumbo Shrimp starter Jorge Guzman (W, 3-6) as Jacksonville fought back from the early deficit with three answered runs.

Guzman, whom the Barons tagged for seven runs in 4.1 innings of work in his initial start against Birmingham on April 18, scattered six hits and allowed one run Thursday night.

Barons starter Tanner Banks (L, 1-4) went pitch-for-pitch against Guzman, but came up short and suffered his fourth loss of the season. The southpaw 27-year-old southpaw surrendered just three runs (two earned), but the Jumbo Shrimp tagged him for 10 hits in 6.2 innings.

Hunter Schryver logged 2.1 scoreless innings of work out of the bullpen for the Barons, while Jacksonville's Dylan Lee locked down his sixth save of the season.

Birmingham placed the potential tying run at the plate in the ninth after Sheets ripped a single into right, but Lee induced a 5-4-3 double play to end the game.

The Barons and Jumbo Shrimp will continue their five-game series Friday night as Birmingham right-hander Lincoln Henzman (0-1, 9.28) opposes Jacksonville right-hander Cody Poteet (3-3, 2.49).

First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. CT at Regions Field and the game will be broadcast via WJQX-FM 100.5. Coverage will begin at 6:50 p.m. with the Coca-Cola Pregame Show.
