FLEMING BAGS FIVE HITS, BUT SHRIMP FALL 8-6

Billy Fleming homered and collected five hits on Tuesday, but the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp's rally fell short in an 8-6 loss to the Chattanooga Lookouts. Gavin LaValley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the first inning for the game's first run. Taylor Trammell launched a two-run shot in the second to make it 3-0. Fleming's solo homer in the bottom of the second put the Jumbo Shrimp on the board. Jacksonville tied the game in the third on a Joe Dunand RBI single and J.C. Millan RBI ground out. In the fourth, Michael Beltre went yard before Ibandel Isabel crushed a grand slam to make it 8-3. An inning later, Gabriel Guerrero laced an RBI single and Anfernee Seymour added a two-run double to get the Jumbo Shrimp within 8-6.

BILLY THE KID

Jacksonville infielder Billy Fleming matched a career-high on Sunday by striking out three times in an 0-for-4 performance. After a day off on Monday, the Churchville, Pa., native exploded for a career-high five base knocks, including a home run, on Tuesday against Chattanooga. The 26-year-old infielder became the second Jumbo Shrimp player to lash five hits in a game this season, joining Brian Miller, who enjoyed a five-knock day on April 20 at Biloxi. Fleming, who has played in 37 games this season between Jacksonville, Triple-A New Orleans and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre of the New York Yankees' organization, is batting .406/.429/.656 in nine games with the Shrimp.

'PEN PALS

An unearned run in the 10th inning on Sunday in Montgomery halted the Jumbo Shrimp bullpen's scoreless innings streak at 14. That said, the last time a Jacksonville reliever yielded an earned run was on June 25 - a span of 27.0 frames. Over the last 19 games, Jumbo Shrimp relief pitchers have tossed 68.1 innings with just six runs, five earned, for a 0.66 ERA. During this 19-game span, the Jumbo Shrimp's bullpen has collectively surrendered just 30 hits (4.0 H/9) while whiffing 70 (9.2 K/9) against 20 walks (2.6 BB/9). A big part of the success for Jacksonville relief pitchers has been their ability to retire first batters; on the season, the club's bullpen has retired 75.8 percent of first batters faced, several ticks above the baseball-wide average that hovers around 70 percent.

NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE

Jacksonville infielder Joe Dunand came into play on June 9 with a dormant season batting line of .209/.275/.262. However, in the 21 games since then, the Miami native is for 24-for-73 at the plate, slashing a robust .329/.395/.479 with eight doubles, one home run, six RBIs and seven walks. A product of N.C. State, Dunand has dropped his strikeout percentage from 29.7 percent with Jacksonville in 2018 to 22.6 percent this year. However, his ground ball rate has shot up from 32.4 to 45.5 percent.

FRIENDS CLOSE, ENEMIES CLOSER

Throughout every level in the history of baseball, nearly every team expects to go about .500 in games decided by one or two runs. However, the Jumbo Shrimp have posted a combined 17-30 (.362) record in games determined by two runs or fewer. Interestingly, 16 of Jacksonville's last 21 games have been decided by two runs or fewer. The Jumbo Shrimp have won 10 of these 16 contests.

MILLER HIGH LIFE

Jacksonville outfielder Brian Miller has reached base at least once in 36 of his last 39 games, going 49-for-151 (.325/.382/.397) with nine doubles, one triple, 13 RBIs and 13 walks during this span. On the season, the Raleigh, N.C., native ranks fifth in the Southern League with 81 hits, tied for 10th in stolen bases with 13 and 11th in batting average at .283. A former North Carolina Tar Heel, Miller is pulling the ball at a career-high 47.1 percent clip while going the opposite way a career-low 22.1 percent of the time, the eighth-lowest such mark of the 136 Southern League hitters with at least 70 plate appearances on the year.

SHRIMP SKEWERS

Rarely has Jacksonville lost when having a great game offensively, but the Shrimp lashed six runs and 13 hits collectively on Tuesday in an 8-6 defeat. The club's record knocked down to 16-3 when scoring at least six runs and eased to 28-14 when outhitting their opponent... With three games complete in this series against Chattanooga, both teams have combined to launch 10 home runs. Seven of those shots have been hit by the Lookouts... The Shrimp managed three straight series wins before this current set, but they are hoping for a series split with Chattanooga.
