Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp play a 3:35 p.m. ET Sunday contest at the Biloxi Shuckers. LHP McKenzie Mills (0-2, 6.75 ERA) starts for the Jumbo Shrimp against Shuckers RHP Trey Supak (1-1, 2.16 ERA). Coverage begins at 3:20 p.m. on MiLB.tv, Sunny 102.3 FM, TuneIn and JaxShrimp.com.

SHUCKERS RALLY PAST SHRIMP IN SERIES OPENER

Brian Miller collected a career-high five hits, but an eight-run Biloxi sixth inning Saturday powered the Shuckers to a 12-7 victory over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. After Biloxi plated a pair in the fourth, Jacksonville tied the in the fifth on an RBI double by Justin Twine and RBI single by Joe Dunand. Miller laced an RBI double in the sixth and then scored on an error to make it 4-2 Jumbo Shrimp. However, the Shuckers exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the frame to go up 10-4. Miller registered an RBI single in the eighth, but Biloxi promptly scored two more in the bottom of the eighth. Bryson Brigman hit a two-run home run in the ninth to get Jacksonville within 12-7.

FOURTEEN POINTS

Jacksonville outfielder Magneuris Sierra went 1-for-4 with a walk on Saturday, continuing a hot start to the season. The San Cristobal, Dominican Republic native is currently riding a 14-game hitting streak in which he is batting 20-for-57 (.351/.403/.421) with four doubles, three RBIs, four walks and one hit-by-pitch. Sierra is tied for the Southern League in hits (20) while ranking tied for third in average (.333), tied for fifth in doubles (four) and 10th in OBP (.394).

THE STRUGGLE IS REAL

Jacksonville started the season 3-2, but the Jumbo Shrimp have now lost nine of their last 11 games heading into play on Sunday, including five in a row. Since this 11-game stretch began on April 10, the Jumbo Shrimp have scored just 29 runs (2.6 per game), the third-fewest in Double-A. Jacksonville also ranks 20th in average (.231), 27th in on-base percentage (.292), 25th in slugging percentage (.319) and 26th in OPS (.611) during this run.

'PEN PALS

Heading into play Saturday, Jacksonville's bullpen had ceded only 10 runs, eight earned, on 35 hits (4.8 H/9) in 66.0 innings for a 1.09 ERA on the season. However, in just 3.0 frames in Saturday's series opener at Biloxi, the Jumbo Shrimp relief corps was touched up for seven runs, all earned, on seven hits. Even with Saturday's rough contest, Jacksonville relievers have still only yielded just 17 runs, 15 earned, on 42 hits (5.5 H/9) for a 1.96 ERA on the year, striking out 78 (10.2 K/9) against 24 walks (3.1 BB/9).

EIGHT CRAZY RUNS

Jacksonville's series opener with Biloxi on Saturday saw the Jumbo Shrimp set or match single-game highs for most runs scored (seven), hits (12), hits in an inning (three), triples (one), home runs (one), stolen bases (two), runs allowed (12), hits allowed (15), walks allowed in an inning (three) and hits allowed in an inning (six). The Jumbo Shrimp also surrendered eight runs in the sixth inning, their worst frame since July 24, 2018, when they yielded nine runs in the 10th inning to Montgomery, one of four innings in which Jacksonville ceded at least eight runs last season (high of 11 in the fifth inning on June 24, 2018 at Mississippi). Over the last four games, the 2019 Jumbo Shrimp have ceded several different frames resulting in crooked numbers, including an eight-run inning, one five-run inning, two three-run innings and four two-run innings.

NO STEALS FOR YOU

Jumbo Shrimp catcher B.J Lopez nabbed an attempted base stealer on Saturday in Biloxi. Lopez has teamed with Rodrigo Vigil and Santiago Chavez, who has caught eight attemped base stealers, the most of any catcher in Double-A, to form a dynamic defensive backstop trio. As a team, Jacksonville has gunned down 13 potential base stealers, the most in Double-A. The club's 50.0 percent caught stealing rate ranks tied for fourth in Double-A.

PANIC AT THE DISH, THOUGH

Jacksonville went 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position on Saturday, stranding a total of 10 men. Through 16 games on the season, the Jumbo Shrimp are just 21-for-139 (.151/.261/.194) with ducks on the pond. The good news is that, throughout every single level in the history of baseball, situational hitting numbers normalize with bigger sample sizes as the season goes on. The 2019 Jumbo Shrimp's overall batting line is .221/.287/.302, which, while not great, is an improvement over the club's numbers with runners in scoring position.

SHRIMP SCOPE

Jacksonville starting pitchers are averaging just 4.1 innings per start, going 2-11 with a 5.20 ERA. Their 10 home runs allowed are tied for the fifth-worst such mark at the Double-A level.
