New Jersey Jackals News Release
Atlantic City, NJ - 1B Juan Tejeda continued his hot start to the month of July as the New Jersey Jackals defeated the Atlantic City Surf 16-14 on Thursday night in front of a Can-Am League-record 8,016 fans at Bernie Robbins Stadum.
Tejeda went 2-5 with five RBIs, including a grand slam. The first baseman now has ten RBIs in three games this month. The Jackals jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning as they chased Surf starter Aaron Easton from the game. In the frame, 3B Vic Davilla and SS Casey Gordon each recorded two-run doubles. However, the Surf countered by scoring the next eight runs to take an 8-7 lead. After plating two runs in the first, two-run home runs in the bottom of the second inning by 2B Brad Thoma and LF Joe Burke cut the Jackals lead to 8-6. In the third inning, DH Clyde Williams doubled home a run and 3B Gil Zayas plated a run with a single. New Jersey then tied it at eight in the top of the third, but Atlantic City re-gained the lead at 10-8 with two bottom of the third inning runs.
In the top of the fifth, New Jersey countered once again, plating four runs on Tejeda's grand slam to lead 12-10. The teams exchanged runs in the seventh inning before Atlantic City tied it at 14 with two runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth. In the top of the ninth, the Jackals struck Surf reliever Kyle George for two more runs to take a 16-14 lead and cap the scoring. George (1-1) took the loss, allowing two runs in one inning on the hill. New Jersey reliever Justin Barnes (2-0) picked up the win, walked two batters and striking out one in 2/3 of an inning. Rusty Tucker pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth to notch his tenth save of the season.
The Jackals and Surf continue their four-game series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, you can catch every inning via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the broadcast beginning five minutes prior to first pitch.
