Sussex Skyhawks News Release

AUGUSTA, N.J. - Sussex starter Kyle Ruwe picked up his league-leading seventh win of the season as the Skyhawks topped the Ottawa Rapidz 5-4 on Thursday night at Skylands Park.

Ruwe (7-1) gave up four runs and scattered nine hits over 7.1 innings. He walked one and struck out three. Matt Petrusek pitched the final five outs to earn his seventh save of the season. Noel Baca (1-6) took the loss for Ottawa, giving up five runs on 11 hits in five innings.

The Skyhawks (21-18) got on the board in the bottom of the second when Yohanny Valera stroked a two-run double down the right field line giving Sussex an early 2-0 lead. After a groundout, which moved Valera to third, Jay Yaconetti bounced a single past a drawn-in infield to score Valera and give the Skyhawks a 3-0 advantage.

After Ottawa (11-27) cut the Sussex lead to 3-2, Ron Perodin drove in Chris Brown with an RBI-single to make it a 4-2 Skyhawks' lead in the bottom of the fourth.

Matt Weston blasted a solo home run to right field in the fifth inning to extend the Sussex lead to 5-2.

Ottawa made the game interesting in the top of the eighth inning with three straight hits that cut the Sussex lead to 5-3. With runners on first and third, Jereme Milons dropped a single to shallow right that drove in Jabe Bergeron and pulled the Rapidz within one run, 5-4.

Sussex returns to action Friday night at Skylands Park against the Nashua Pride. Game time is set for 6:35 p.m., with a Fourth of July Fireworks Show to follow the game.
