Elmira Jackals News Release
READING, Pa. - December 15, 2013 - The Elmira Jackals received two goals from Christian Ouellet and 26 saves from Maxime Clermont to pick up a 3-2 win over the Reading Royals on Sunday evening at Santander Arena. The win improved Elmira to 9-11-2 on the season.
Ouellet produced three points, including his first goal of the season, in Elmira's win at Wheeling on Thursday night and kept things rolling in the first period on Sunday. The heavy snow, and one day postponement of Sunday's game, didn't do anything to cool off the second-year pro as he notched a pair of goals to pace Elmira to a 2-1 lead after one. The first gave Elmira a 1-0 lead at 3:16 and the second reclaimed the one-goal advantage at 12:46. Both goals were scored in similar fashion; close-range scores from the doorstep off of rebounds given up by goalie Riley Gill. Ludwig Karlsson assisted on both goals and Zach McCullough picked up his first pro point with an assist on the second. Reading's Ryan Cruthers had tied the game at 4:55, but Clermont stopped nine of Reading's 10 shots to ensure Elmira kept the lead after one.
The Jackals were hungry to put more distance between themselves and the Royals in the second and were afforded plenty of chances over the first half of the frame. A steady parade of Royals to the penalty box put Elmira on three consecutive power plays, and the Jackals were steady in putting the pressure on Gill. Nearly half of their 15 shots in the period came on those three power plays but the Jackals were unable to convert. Then, just past the midway point, the Royals caught Elmira in a bad change and Louie Caporusso set up Yannick Tifu on a 2-on-0 rush for the tying score. Elmira didn't allow Reading to stay close for long, though, and responded less than a minute later. Matt Carter and Rob Bellamy set up Kyle Bushee on the rush for his third of the year as Elmira regained the lead at 3-2.
Reading gifted Elmira a power play less than a minute into the third when Ethan Cox went off for slashing. The Jackals were unable to generate a shot on the advantage, though, and they were left to protect their one-goal lead for the remainder of the period. The Jackals did well to not give Reading any power play chances in that time and Reading really only started to pressure when Gill was pulled for the extra attacker with 56 seconds to play. Clermont turned in a handful of strong saves down the home stretch to preserve the lead.
Clermont picked up his fourth win of the season with 26 stops while Gill was saddled with his fifth loss on 35 saves. Elmira was 0-for-5 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.
