Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals rolled to their fourth consecutive victory over the Reading Royals on Friday night at First Arena in front of a club record 4,653 fans. With the 4-3 win the Jackals improved their record to 27-19-4 on the season.
The first period tonight had a nearly identical start to Wednesday night in Reading with the Jackals striking early to grab a 1-0 lead. Tonight it was Justin Daniels converting a feed from Andrew Rowe on a 3-on-1 to left Elmira in front. Daniels centered Elmira's first line for the first time after Louie Caporusso was called up to Binghamton in the American Hockey League. Maxime Clermont made the 1-0 lead stand up with six saves.
Reading tested Clermont much more often in the second period as the Jackals goalie saw 14 shots sent his way. Elmira peppered Reading's Sergey Kostenko with 12 shots at the other end of the ice and it all resulted in both teams scoring twice. Reading tied the game on a David Vallorani power play goal at 4:52, but it only took Elmira just over three minutes to answer back. Jordan Pietrus netted his 12th on a wrist shot from the left wing with assists by Alex Beauregard and Steven Kaunisto. Reading's Mark Mitera cashed in at 16:26 to continue the volley, but a late power play goal by Kevin Harvey ensured the Jackals took the lead into the third.
Reading continued to pester the Jackals in the final frame and batted in the tying goal at 5:18. A broken play, with Reading on the power play, left Brock Shelgren alone in the slot and he hit twine for his first professional goal. Elmira refused to wilt under the pressure, though, and bounced back with its second power play goal to reclaim the lead. Rowe worked his way in on the left wing and spun a centering pass to Rob Bellamy who punched home his 10th goal of the season. The Jackals took a too many men on the ice minor with just over a minute to play and faced six Royals skaters when Kostenko was lifted for the extra attacker. Reading got a couple of good looks but couldn't convert and the Jackals held on for the win.
Clermont picked up his 12th victory of the season with 26 saves. The Jackals ended the night 2-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-5 on the penalty kill.
