Jackals Shoot For ECHL Record Against Trenton
Published on November 2, 2009 under ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
Later this week, the Elmira Jackals will attempt to become the third team in ECHL history to begin a season with eight consecutive victories, accomplished by Trenton in 2001 and Dayton in 1994. The Jackals will bid for a share of the record on Friday night at First Arena at 7:35 PM when they host the Trenton Devils for the second of four straight meetings between the two teams.
The Jackals already achieved a team record this season when they had their third consecutive sell out at First Arena last Friday night, the first time they accomplished this feat since joining the ECHL. Elmira defeated Cincinnati 4-2 after falling behind by two goals in the first 3:20 of the first period. Matt Lowry and Chanse Fitzpatrick scored the first two Jackals goals of the evening, before Chris Korchinski's second shorthanded goal of the season gave the Jackals the lead midway through the third period. Tyler Donati added an empty-net goal for the 4-2 win.
On Saturday, Elmira became the first ECHL team to reach seven victories when it defeated Trenton 4-1 at First Arena. Fitzpatrick and Justin and Tyler Donati each contributed three points in the victory, with Fitzpatrick scoring two goals and an assist and the Donati twins each netting a goal and two assists.
Kalamazoo lost in regulation and Idaho lost in a shootout on Saturday night, leaving the Jackals as the only unblemished team in the ECHL entering the league's fourth week.
NOTES
- Chris Holt is tied for the ECHL lead with Idaho's Richard Bachman with four victories. During the second period of Saturday night's victory, Holt received an assist from the First Arena crowd. After a puck slipped behind Holt and sat on the goal line, the crowd shouted at Holt to turn around. He eventually did and was able to freeze the puck, and the Vancouver, British Columbia native turned around and applauded the crowd, thanking them for their help.
"Without the fans and their uproar when the puck was trickling in, I would not have turned around. I originally thought I had it in between my pads, so if I moved I thought it would have gone in. Without the fans, that was a goal," Holt said.
Holt has now played in 30 consecutive games dating back to the beginning of the 2008-2009 season in which he has allowed no more than three goals.
- Justin and Tyler Donati enter the week tied for the ECHL lead with 14 points, each with four goals and ten assists.
- Chanse Fitzpatrick's seven goals place him in second in the ECHL. He had three goals and an assist this weekend, including the game-winning goal on Saturday.
- Brennan Turner had a +5 on the weekend, and his +8 leads all ECHL defensemen, and puts him in a tie for third among all skaters. Travis Gawryletz led the team with a +6 on the weekend. He is tied for second among ECHL defensemen with a +6.
- Justin Donati has a seven-game point streak to begin the season.
