Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Little Falls, NJ -- Andrew Wishy homered and drove in four, but the Tornadoes bullpen was unable to protect a 1-run lead in the bottom of the 9th, as Worcester fell to New Jersey, 6-5, this afternoon.
Wishy ripped a two-out RBI single to right in the 1st, added a sacrifice fly in the 3rd, then hit a tremendous two-run blast to right in the 6th, that at the time, tied the game at 4-4. Lefty Mike Meagher struggled early, allowing three 1st inning runs, but settled down after that, giving up just one more run through his five innings of work.
The game remained tied until the top of the 8th, when Jackals reliever Justin Garza (2-1) issued a two-out walk to Keith Beauregard. Beauregard stole second base, his third steal of the game, bringing up Patrick Perry. Perry came through with a line single to center, plating Beauregard, and giving the Tornadoes a 5-4 lead.
Worcester would maintain the lead to the bottom of the 9th, thanks to three shutout innings of relief from Reid Willett. Righty Eddie Pena was brought on to try to record the save, but gave up a leadoff single to Clyde Williams and a double to Wilton Veras, putting men at second and third with no one out. Matt Lauderdale was intentionally walked to load the bases and pinch-hitter Jud Thigpen hit into a fielders choice, forcing the lead man at home. Joe Mihalics then hit into what appeared to be a 5-2-3 game-ending double play, but home plate umpire Kedrin Wright ruled catcher's interference on Patrick Perry, allowing the tying run to score. Tim Turner than singled to right to produce the game-winner.
The loss was the third walkoff loss of the season for the Tornadoes. Worcester suffered three walkoff losses in all of 2006. The Tornadoes will try to return to their winning ways on Thursday night when they welcome the North Shore Spirit to town for the first game of a four-game series. Righty Junior Guerrero will get the start for Worcester and he will be opposed by North Shore righty Ryan Bicondoa. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
