New Jersey Jackals News Release

Atlantic City, NJ - New Jersey Jackals starter Ted Serro (1-0) made his first professional start and pitched well, earning the win after allowing just two runs on eight hits in six innings of work as the Jackals defeated the Atlantic City Surf 9-2 on Friday night in front of 6,984 fans at Bernie Robbins Stadium.

For the second consecutive night, New Jersey jumped out to a first inning lead. A leadoff single by 2B Marcus Sanders was followed by a Zack Smithlin walk against Surf ace left-hander Brian Rodaway. Later in the inning, DH Luke Allen grounded to third with the bases loaded, but Surf 3B Gil Zayas threw the ball wide of first base, allowing two runs to score as the Jackals lead 2-0 before Atlantic City came up to bat. In the top of the third inning, the Jackals struck for three more runs to extend their lead to 5-0. Smithlin started it off with a single, which was followed by a double by 1B Juan Tejeda. The next batter, 3B Chris Kelly, singled home both Smithlin and Tejeda to make it a 4-0 New Jersey lead. Later in the frame, Kelly scored on a Marcos Rodriguez RBI base knock. In the top of the fifth inning, Jackals C Matt Lauderdale lifted his third home run of the season to left field to give New Jersey a 6-0 advantage.

Serro held Atlantic City scoreless through five innings before the Surf strung together four consecutive two-out singles to break through in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded, DH Eddie Kim plated LF Joe Burke and 1B Clyde Williams with a two-run base knock to cut the Jackals lead to 6-2. However, New Jersey countered with three runs in the eighth inning off Atlantic City reliever Derek Barrows to put the game out of reach. Rodriguez walked to being the frame and, after a single by Sanders, Tejeda ripped an RBI single to extend the Jackals lead to 8-2. Kelly then capped the scoring with a run-scoring double as New Jersey ended the eighth with a 9-2 advantage. Rodaway (4-3), who entered the day as the Can-Am League's ERA leader, was roughed up as he allowed six runs - five earned - on eight hits while walking one and striking out four to take the loss for Atlantic City.

For New Jersey, Kelly finished the day 2-4 with four RBIs. The Jackals' bullpen pitched well, as Justin Barnes and Ryan Pacyna combined to pitch two perfect innings. The Jackals and Surf continue their four-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. when Jackals right-hander Juan Done squares off against the Surf's J.C. Huguet. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, you can catch every inning via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the broadcast beginning five minutes prior to first pitch.
