Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, MA (July 4, 2008) - LHP Tom Cochran was brilliant, and the Worcester Tornadoes offense started quickly in a 6-3 win over the Brockton Rox on Friday night. Cochran improved to 7-0 and sent the Rox to a fourth straight loss.

Worcester started out quickly with two first-inning runs off of Rox starter LHP Chris McDonough. C Alex Trezza and SS Chuck Jeroloman each delivered RBI singles. In the third inning, the Tornadoes extended its lead to 5-0 when Trezza and Jeroloman again delivered back-to-back run-producing hits, and 2B Omar Pena contributed a sacrifice fly.

Trailing 5-0 in the fifth inning, the Rox offense finally showed some life against Cochran, the Can-Am League's Pitcher of the Month for June. 2B Melvin Falu led off the inning with a single, and RF Jud Thigpen smacked his team-leading eighth home run of the season over the left-field wall to cut the lead to 5-2.

McDonough settled in to work harmlessly through the fourth and fifth innings. The Rox bullpen allowed one run over the final four innings of the game, but Cochran continued his dominance. He sent down the Rox in order five different times throughout the game.

With the score at 6-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Worcester turned to its bullpen for the first time. RHP Eddie Pena relieved Cochran and the Rox offense created some sparks. The first three batters reached base, and 1B Jason Colson drove in a run on a deep sacrifice fly to center field. But Pena induced a game-ending double play off the bat of CF Ervin Alcantara to end the drama.

The Rox and Tornadoes square off again on Saturday night as Brockton sends RHP Wayne Lundgren to start against Worcester RHP Shaun McNamara. Saturday night's first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
