New Jersey Jackals News Release
The Jackal bats came out hot, and took the first game in a three game series against the New Haven County Cutters, by a score of 9-4.
New Jersey took the lead in the bottom of the first. With a runner aboard the bases, Kevin Grijak homered to deep right, make the score 2-0. It was Grijak' s second homer of the season.
Then in the second, with runners on second and third after a Chris Rowan walk, and a Jay LaFlair double, John Anderson singled down the left field line, scoring both runners. The two RBI single gave the Jackals an early 4-0 lead.
The Cutters chipped away on the Jackals' lead in the top of the third. A leadoff double by Kevin Forbes, and a bunt single by Tyrone Pendergrass, led to an RBI groundout by Jose Mateo and a sac fly RBI by Jimmy Hurst.
The Jackals tacked on three more to their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Juan Infante doubled into right field, scoring one. The following batter Grijak crushed his second homerun of the evening, for two more RBI.
In the fifth, RBI singles by Hurst and Hector Lebron cut the New Jersey lead once again. Through five complete, New Jersey held a 7-4 advantage.
New Jersey took back those two runs in the sixth. After a single by Infante, and a double by Grijak, the Jackals had runners on second and third. With Wilton Veras at the plate, Cutters' reliever Tim Keinath balked in Grijak. Wady Almonte then singled down the left field line, for RBI number 26 of the season. The scores made it a 9-4 New Jersey lead, and that is the way it ended.
Starter Josh Miller of the Jackals pitched five innings, giving up five earned runs on nine hits. He evened up his season record at 2-2.
New Haven starting pitcher Orlando Encarnacion was awarded the loss in four innings of work. He gave up seven earned runs on nine hits.
Kevin Grijak was 4-5 with two homeruns and four RBI. Zach Smithlin also went 3-4 with a double, and a run scored.
For New Haven, Hector Lebron was 2-3 with an RBI.
