New Haven County Cutters News Release
(Little Falls, NJ) The New Haven County Cutters could not overcome an early deficit and fell 9-4 to the New Jersey Jackals on Friday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. The loss is New Haven's first to a South Division opponent (11-1).
New Jersey opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first on a Kevin Grijak two run homer off Orlando Encarnacion giving the Jackals an early 2-0.
The Jackals doubled their lead in the second, on a two-run John Anderson single, extending the New Jersey lead to 4-0.
The Cutters got on the board in the top of the third off New Jersey starter Josh Miller. After a leadoff double by Kevin Forbes, Tyrone Pendergrass reached on a bunt single leading to a RBI groundout by Jose Mateo and a RBI sac-fly by Jimmy Hurst.
With the Jackals leading 5-2 in the fourth, Grijak hit his second homerun of the night, a two-run shot, giving New Jersey a 7-2 lead. The New Jersey first basemen finished the night 4-for-5 with two homeruns and four RBI.
New Haven cut into the Jackal lead in the fifth as Jimmy Hurst and Hector Lebron collected RBI singles trimming the New Jersey lead to 7-4. However, that would be as close as New Haven would get as the Jackals added two more runs in the sixth en route to the 9-4 victory.
Jackals' starter Josh Miller went five innings, giving up four runs on nine hits to even up his record at 2-2. New Haven starter Orlando Encarnacion (2-4) tossed four innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits and took the loss.
Cutters first basemen Hector Lebron was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Designated Hitter Jimmy Hurst continued his hot hitting going 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
The Cutters and Jackals continue their three game series tomorrow night with first pitch set for 7:05. New Haven returns home on Monday, July 5th with a three-game series against the Bangor Lumberjacks.
