Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

Jason Vargas allowed just one earned run over eight innings while kicking in three hits of his own as the Albuquerque Isotopes (36-25) put together one of the most explosive offensive nights in club history with an 18-2 win over Memphis (21-38) Thursday night at Isotopes Park.

The ‘Topes tied a franchise record with 18 runs and set a club record with 23 hits en route to their third-straight win and 20th overall at home this season. Seven Isotopes recorded a multi-hit night, with Eric Reed going 4-for-6 with three RBI and four runs scored and Chris Aguila going 4-for-5 with six runs driven in. Of Aguila's six RBI, five were driven in with two outs. Shortstop Robert Andino went 3-for-6 with two RBI and three runs scored. Albuquerque's damage came with the help of just one home run-a pinch-hit, three-run blast by Mike Colangelo in the 8th. The top-four hitters in the Albuquerque lineup managed to finish 13-for-22 with11 RBI and seven runs scored.

On the hill, Vargas (2-1) scattered six hits and two runs-one earned-over eight innings with six strikeouts to earn the win. At the plate, he finished 3-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt, two runs scored and two more driven in.

After Vargas' exit, Wes Wilkerson came on to clean things up, recording a 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish out the ballgame.

The Redbirds used three pitchers on the night, though none of the trio was able to corral the Albuquerque lineup. Starter John Webb (3-5) took the loss, allowing nine runs on 11 hits through five innings. Former Isotope John Riedling surrendered five runs on five hits in one inning of work, and Carmen Cali finished up with four runs allowed over two innings.

Albuquerque scored twice in the first frame and never looked back, going on to score four runs in the fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to coast to the series-opening victory. Memphis' lone offensive highlight came in the sixth when Brian Martin smacked a two-out single through the box that chased home two runs. That made the score 6-2, but the Isotopes would go on to score 12 runs over their final three at-bats and put the game out of reach.

During Thursday's 50-Cent Hot Dog Night at Isotopes Park, 26,748 hot dogs were consumed. That figure is better than 7,400 more hot dogs than were eaten at the first 50-Cent Hot Dog Night of the season in April.

The ‘Topes and Redbirds will hook up again on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Albuquerque is set to give the baseball to Renyel Pinto (3-1, 2.53), while Memphis will counter with Randy Leek (2-5, 4.70).

Friday's game includes an appearance by the Zooperstars! presented by Arby's. Tickets can be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, www.albuquerquebaseball.com, Ticketmaster outlets, or at www.ticketmaster.com. For more information, please call (505) 924-2255.
