Isotopes Rally to Top Omaha in Extras
April 17, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
PAPILLION, Neb. - Alex Castellanos hit a game-tying home run in the eighth inning, then Rusty Ryal and Tim Federowicz delivered RBI singles in the 10th inning as the Albuquerque Isotopes rallied for a 3-1 win over the Omaha Storm Chasers.
On a very windy night at Werner Park, on the outskirts of Omaha, the wind was blowing in and both offenses had trouble putting together any rallies. Out of the 16 combined hits, 15 of them were singles.
Castellanos pulled a 1-1 pitch from Dan Wheeler down the left-field line - one of the few areas where the wind wasn't knocking down fly balls - and tied the game with his third home run of the season. Steve Smith (1-0) retired all nine batters he faced in relief for the win. Steve Ames struck out two in the 10th to get the save. Starting pitcher Matt Magill struck out seven in six innings, the only run he allowed was unearned, and surrendered just two hits.
Castellanos had three hits in the game, and he's hit safely in five of his last six at-bats, since breaking a 0-for-13 drought on Monday. Castellanos ignited the 10thinning rally with a single to left off Storm Chasers relief pitcher Louis Coleman (0-1). That single came after Topes manager Lorenzo Bundy was ejected by first-base umpire DJ Reyburn.
Scott Van Slyke, who was 2-for-5, legged out an infield single to keep the rally alive. Ryal hit a single to right-center to score Castellanos with the go-ahead run. Federowicz followed with a single up the middle that scored Van Slyke.
Game two of the four-game series is Wednesday. Right-hander Blake Johnson will start for the Isotopes. Lefty Ryan Verdugo is on the hill for Omaha.
