Islanders Sign Barrett Heisten

August 25, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release

In their continued efforts to add character players to the organization, the National Hockey League's New York Islanders have signed gritty forward Barrett Heisten, a 1999 first-round draft pick of the Buffalo Sabres. The 24-year-old Heisten has spent the last two seasons with the Utah Grizzlies of the American Hockey League.

After two standout years at the University of Maine, winning the 1999 NCAA championship, and one season with Seattle of the Western Hockey League (20-57-77 in 58 games), Heisten signed with the New York Rangers as a free agent in the summer of 2001. He split the 2001-02 season with Hartford (AHL), Utah (five goals in 12 games) and the Rangers, for whom he was scoreless in ten NHL games. The last two seasons with Utah, Heisten has been a combined 14-23-37 with 145 penalty minutes in 131 games.

"I coached Barrett on a pretty talented US National Team that was made up of many current NHLers, and if you took a snapshot of that group, he was one of the players I felt had the best shot at solid NHL career," said Sound Tigers head coach Greg Cronin. "Barrett is a terrific skater, strong on the puck, responsible defensively and fearless. He'll bring a work ethic and energy that will be very contagious."

The 6-1, 200-pound Heisten, a native of Anchorage, Alaska, will report to training camp next month.
