Jackson Generals News Release
Jackson, Tenn. - The Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks, were stung by the longball on Tuesday, falling 4-1 to the Chattanooga Lookouts at The Ballpark at Jackson. The Generals (28-21) fell short of matching their season-best five-game winning streak, while the Lookouts (27-22) closed within a game of Jackson in the North Division standings.
Right-hander Kevin McCanna (2-2, 2.16 ERA) shut out Chattanooga through six innings, but the seventh proved deadly. After a one-out walk to Taylor Trammell --- McCanna's first free pass issued in the game --- Lookouts first baseman Ibandel Isabel stepped to the plate, hitless in two at-bats up to that point. Isabel entered the day as the Southern League leader with 13 home runs, and he bludgeoned a full-count offering from McCanna out to left-center for a two-run shot, giving Chattanooga a 2-0 lead. Isabel has just nine hits over his last 44 at-bats, but seven of them have been home runs.
McCanna eventually finished the seventh after allowing a double to Jose Siri and an RBI single to Calten Daal, upping the defcit to 3-0. McCanna matched a career high with nine strikeouts despite the loss. Damien Magnifico contributed a scoreless eighth inning, but Cameron Gann was not as fortunate. The right-hander conceded another run to Chattanooga in the ninth without the ball ever reaching the outfield, as Chattanooga earned a pair of walks and used three infield singles to plate a run for a 4-1 lead.
The Generals were tied in knots by Chattanooga starter Scott Moss (3-2, 3.45 ERA) and reliever Ty Boyles, who picked up a hold in the winning effort by Moss. Those two southpaws held Jackson to a pair of hits and two walks while striking out nine men over the game's first seven innings. Jackson scored an unearned run in the eighth after a pair of throwing errors by the Lookouts allowed pinch-hitter Ryan Grotjohn to reach base and score on consecutive plays. Joe Kuhnel (S, 7) shut the door without ever allowing the tying run to reach the plate in the ninth inning. Jackson went 0-for-3 with men in scoring position and did not manage an extra-base hit until Jeffrey Baez doubled in the eighth inning.
