Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - RHP Tommy Bergjans allowed just one run in seven innings on Saturday night to help the Tortugas pick up a 4-2 victory over the Jupiter Hammerheads at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Ibandel Isabel homered for the fifth time in six games on the homestand, running his season total to 29. Isabel is the first player in the Florida State League to hit 29 home runs in a season since Ryan Strieby (Lakeland) in 2008.
Tyler Stephenson led off the bottom of the second with a double and scored on a Brantley Bell single a few pitches later to start the scoring.
The Tortugas added two more in the fourth on a 375 foot, two-run homerun down the right field line off the bat of Michael Beltre, his first of the season, to extend the lead to 3-0.
Jupiter got on the board for the first time in the sixth. James Nelson led off with a double, moved to third on a fly out, then scored on a ground out off the bat of Lazaro Alonso.
Isabel led off the eighth inning with a 442 foot homerun to center field off RHP Reilly Hovis to provide the Tortugas late inning insure and run the lead to 4-1.
LHP Carlos Diaz tossed a perfect top half of the eighth, then went out to start the ninth. After surrendering a lead-off single to Riley Mahan, Diaz struckout Alonso for the first out.
Diaz was then replaced with RHP Joel Kuhnel. Mahan stole second against Kuhnel, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a JC Millan ground out to cut the score in half to 4-2. Following surrendering back-to-back two-out singles, Kuhnel struckout pinch hitter Tristan Pompey to end the game.
Bergjans (3-2) struck out five and allowed seven hits in seven, one-run innings. Roeder (5-3) allowed three runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts for the loss. Kuhnel earned his 15th save, allowing two hits and striking out one in 2/3 of an inning.
Daytona will wrap up their homestand tomorrow night as RHP Tejay Antone (3-2, 4.16) gets the ball. He will be matched up with RHP Jorge Guzman (0-7, 3.57), who gets the ball for the Hammerheads.
The first 500 fans will receive an interactive t-shirt with the chance to put their own spin on a Bob Ross painting.
First pitch Sunday is scheduled for 5:35 PM, with coverage beginning at 5:20 PM with the Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
