Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Aberdeen, MD - The Aberdeen IronBirds got great pitching from several members of the bullpen and did just enough offensively to pull out a 2-1 win against the Lowell Spinners, Class-A Short Season affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.

The Spinners jumped out to a 1-0 lead off of IronBirds relief pitcher Matt Taylor, making his first professional appearance. In the top of the fourth, Garin Cecchini hit a one-out infield single, stole second, and then scored when Travis Shaw lined a double to left-center field.

The IronBirds countered with their runs in the bottom of the fifth off of Spinners starter Madison Younginer. Dudley Leonora led off the inning with a single and advanced to second when Glynn Davis bunted his way aboard. Kyle Hoppy sacrificed himself to get runners on second and third. Mychal Givens then came up and was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Joe Velleggia then followed and was hit by a pitch as well, but he got credit for an RBI as Leonora came in to score to tie the game, 1-1. Wynston Sawyer then hit a sacrifice fly to left which brought in Davis, which ended up being the winning run as the IronBirds took a 2-1 lead and made it stick.

Madison Younginer took the loss for Lowell, falling to 0-2. He pitched five innings, allowed five hits, two runs (both earned), one walk, and five strikeouts.

Mike Wright got the start for Aberdeen, but did not factor into the decision. He and Matt Taylor each pitched two innings. Wright allowed just one hit, striking out three. Taylor allowed a run (earned), two hits, two walks, and struck out one. Travis Strong came on and pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits, while striking out one. He earned the win, improving to 1-0. Enrico Jimenez worked the final four outs of the ballgame to earn his first save of the year.

Game two of this three game series will begin tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Parker Bridwell (1-2, 3.00) will get the call for Aberdeen. Luis Diaz (1-1, 4.50) will start for Lowell.

The Aberdeen IronBirds sold out season tickets for the 10thstraight season. Group packages and single-game tickets, however, are still available for the 2011 season. For ticket information, contact our box office at (410) 297-9292 or visit us online at www.IronBirdsbaseball.com.
