Aberdeen IronBirds Game Notes

Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

The Aberdeen IronBirds welcome the Lowell Spinners to town for a three-game series beginning tonight at Ripken Stadium. Full media notes are attached to this email.

Tonight's Match-up

The Aberdeen IronBirds open up their non-divisional schedule tonight as they play host to the Lowell Spinners (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Boston Red Sox). The IronBirds are looking to get back in the win column after dropping eight straight games. Aberdeen fell once again to the Hudson Valley Renegades last night 8-5. A five-run fifth inning against IronBirds reliever Alex Schmarzo propelled the Renegades to victory. Two 2011 draft picks will make their debuts for the IronBirds tonight. Third-round pick Mike Wright will get the start. He's expected to pitch two innings before giving way to fifth-round draft choice Matt Taylor. The Spinners will have right-hander Madison Younginer on the bump.

Wright and Taylor

Wright, the Orioles' third-round pick in 2011, pitched three years at East Carolina University. Wight has a mid-90's fastball that has been clocked as high as 97 MPH. Taylor was Baltimore's fifth-round pick this year. After pitching his freshman season at the University of Alabama, he transferred to Middle Georgia College. This past spring the left-hander went 7-5 with a 3.31 ERA.

Jones Makes Strong Debut

2011 Orioles' ninth round pick Devin Jones made his professional debut last night for the IronBirds. He allowed two unearned runs in an inning of work, as Connor Narron and Chris Clinton made errors behind him. Jones flashed a mid-90's fastball and a strong slider. He struck out three batters in his one inning.

Power Outage

After blasting six home runs in their first nine games, the IronBirds have gone homer-less in their past 10 contests. The last Aberdeen player to homer was Mychal Givens, who hit a solo shot against the Staten Island Yankees on June 25th.

See ya, McNamara Foes

IronBirds fans will be excited to see a team from outside the McNamara Division tonight. Aberdeen managed just two wins in its first 19 games against Staten Island, Brooklyn and Hudson Valley. The next time the IronBirds play a team within the division will be on July 19th, when the Cyclones come back to town.
