STATEN ISLAND, NY - The Staten Island Yankees spoiled a sterling pitching performance from Connecticut Tigers starter Brennan Smith, taking down the Tigers 2-1 on Wednesday night at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
Smith went the distance, throwing eight innings and giving up just two runs, only one of them earned, on six hits, while not walking anyone and striking out six. However, the Tigers offense could not get going and Smith suffered his second loss of the season.
The Yankees, winners of 15 of their last 16 games, got a one-out base hit from Casey Stevenson in the fourth inning, followed by a double from Ali Castillo, putting runners at second and third. Bobby Rinard then grounded a ball out to the shortstop Eugenio Suarez, who bobbled the ball and because of the error Stevenson came in to score.
Jhorge Liccien then came to the plate with Castillo moving up to third on the Suarez error and hit a slow roller to Suarez. The Tigers shortstop flipped to second baseman Colin Kaline to try to start an inning-ending double play, but the throw from Kaline to first was over the head of Dean Green and allowed Castillo to come in and score the second run of the inning.
The Tigers would collect a run in the eighth, after Edwin Gomez led off with a base hit, advanced to second with a stolen base and then to third on a wild pitch. Two batters later Bo McClendon, making his first start of the season, grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Gomez from third. However, it was not enough offense for the Tigers as they dropped the opener of the three-game series.
Yankees starter Evan DeLuca threw six shutout innings picking up his second win of the year, while Vidal Nuno finished it off with three one-hit innings to earn his first save of the season.
The Tigers will try to even up the series with the Yankees tomorrow night in game two of the three-game series from Staten Island. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM.
