GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Iowa Wolves defeated the Grand Rapids Gold, 119-109, on Friday night at Van Ardel Arena in the first game of a two-game series between the teams.
Iowa (3-8) was led in scoring by two-way guard Daishen Nix, who had 32 points in his season debut. Nix added eight rebounds. D.J. Carton returned to the court after missing the team's last game due to injury and had 22 points, five assists, four rebounds and three blocks.
Minnesota assignment player Josh Minott posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds in his season debut with the Wolves. Trevor Keels added 14 points and four assists. Fellow assignment player Leonard Miller scored eight points.
In his season debut for Grand Rapids (1-10), two-way guard Collin Gillespie tallied 27 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds. Fellow two-way Braxton Key also made his debut debut and posted a double-double with 24 points and 14 rebounds.
Iowa erased a 14-point hole in the second quarter and took the lead late in period. The Gold tied it several times but never got the lead back as the Wolves earned their second road win of the season.
Tyrese Martin made his season debut for Iowa after missing the team's first 10 games due to injury. Martin scored seven points, grabbed three rebounds and handed out two assists in just over 15 minutes.
The teams close the series Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. CT.
