Iowa Cubs News Release
After being one-hit in game two of last night's double-header, the Iowa Cubs got the bats going tonight and defeated the Albuquerque Isotopes 9-1 to ensure a split of the series. Cubs' starting pitcher J.R. Mathes picked up his 38th career win in an Iowa uniform, tying Dave Swartzbaugh's franchise record. The Cubs scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning en route to victory. Bryan LaHair went 4-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBI's. The game was played in front of a crowd of 7,684 at Principal Park.
The Isotopes got on the board in the top of the first inning. With two outs and nobody on base, Russ Mitchell blasted a home run to left field, giving the 'Topes an early 1-0 advantage.
Iowa was able to make their mark on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Bobby Scales singled with one out, followed by a towering shot to right by LaHair for his ninth home run of the season. The Cubs took a 2-1 lead and never looked back.
Scales and LaHair ignited the five-run rally in the fourth inning. Scales led off the inning with a single, and LaHair followed him with a double, putting runners at second and third base with no outs. Mathes legged out an infield single with the bases loaded, plating Scales and making it a 3-1 ball game. Jim Adduci and Darwin Barney then hit back-to-back two-run doubles, increasing the Cubs' lead to 7-1.
Adduci and Barney were able to do more damage in the bottom of the sixth. Adduci hit a one-out single and Barney stepped to the plate and knocked a home run to left, only his second of the season, pushing the lead to 9-1.
Mathes (7-5, 4.30) tossed a gem in order to tie the franchise win record. He threw seven innings, giving up six hits and one run, while striking out two. He also did not allow a walk the whole game. Mathes has now gone 20.1 innings without allowing a walk.
The Cubs roughed up Albuquerque starter Claudio Vargas. Vargas (1-3, 7.11) went three-and-two-third innings, surrendering 10 hits, seven runs, one walk, while striking out three.
The Cubs begin a five-game series in four days against the New Orleans Zephyrs tomorrow evening at 7:05 p.m. RH Casey Coleman (7-7, 4.29) will get the ball for Iowa and he will be opposed by RH Tom Mastny (2-0, 1.61) for New Orleans.
