Aces Drop Slugfest, 14-13, To Rivercats

In a game that saw 27 runs, 16 walks and five hit batters, the Aces came up short Tuesday night, losing 14-13 to Sacramento at Aces Ballpark.

The Aces scored 13 runs despite recording just six hits. Ed Rogers starting the scoring with a three-run triple in the third, which started a five-run rally that gave Reno a 5-3 lead. Sacramento clawed back with three runs of their own in the fourth to take a short-lived 6-5 lead.

In the fifth, Doug Deeds hit a two-run homer that capped a four-run frame for the Aces, giving them a 10-6 lead. After Sacramento rallied for eight runs over the final four innings to take a 14-10 lead, the Aces mounted a late rally, scoring three times in the ninth and bringing the tying run to third base. Jeff Bailey would pop out to end the game, however, stranding Drew Macias at third base.

Both starters took no-decisions in the game, with Aces hurler Matt Torra going the first five frames and allowing five earned runs. Jason Urquidez (3-3) took the loss for Reno after giving up two earned runs over 1.1 innings.

Beau Vaughan (1-0) earned the win in relief of River Cats starter Kyle Middleton. Vaughan worked two scoreless innings, striking out two and walking one.

The Aces drew 12 of the game's 16 walks, but went just 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position on the evening. Rogers led the way for Reno offensively, going 1-for-2 with a walk and three RBIs. Pedro Ciriaco went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and was the only Aces player to record more than one hit.

Reno and Sacramento conclude the series Wednesday afternoon, with Reno RHP Wes Roemer (1-4, 6.40 ERA) set to face River Cats LHP John Halama (3-1, 5.40 ERA). First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m.
