Iowa Loses Hand in Loss to Las Vegas

August 6, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (42-71) fell to the Las Vegas 51s (56-58) 6-1, Monday at Principal Park.

Consecutive two-out singles by Mark Zagunis, Ryan Court and Jason Vosler plated a run in the first with Court delivering the scoring blow.

The lead held through three as Alec Mills faced one more than the minimum and fanned five. Las Vegas made noise in the fourth, putting two on with a hit by pitch and a double from Dominic Smith to set the stage for a comeback. Patrick Kivlehan put the 51s on top with a two-out towering three-run bomb to left.

Mills (L, 5-11) worked five frames with three runs allowed on three hits and one walk. He fell one shy of a season best in strikeouts with eight.

Cory Mazzoni pitched a scoreless frame, before surrendering the ball to Alberto Baldonado in the seventh. After spinning a shutout frame, Baldonado was roughed in the eighth as the 51s doubled their score.

The first three batters of the frame reached on a single sandwiched between a pair of walks. Court was able to get the lead runner on a groundball to short, but Las Vegas pushed in a run one batter later on a ground ball to second. James Norwood took over on the hill and promptly served a two-out double to Ty Kelly to score both inherited runners and put the 51s ahead 6-1.

The I-Cubs went just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine as they tallied six hits and walked four times.

Vosler followed a 4-for-4 performance yesterday with a 2-for-4 game to lead Iowa's offensive effort tonight.

The I-Cubs and 51s cap the homestand with a 12:08 first pitch tomorrow at Principal Park. For more information or tickets visit www.iowacubs.com.
