Reno Aces Game Notes vs. Oklahoma City Dodgers

August 6, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release

Today's Game: The Aces (58-55) enter Monday night's contest six games back of the first-place Fresno Grizzlies. Greg Gross will send southpaw Alex Young to the mound to square off against Dodgers rising star Brock Stewart (2-2, 2.64). Young comes in riding a three-game winning streak. As a team, the Aces are 8-2 over their last 10 games and have the second-best record in the Pacific Coast League (El Paso, 9-1) over that span.

Last Game: The Aces dropped game one against the Oklahoma City Dodgers by a score of 12-9. Ildemaro Vargas extended his hit-streak to 31 games, tying the franchise-best mark. Vargas' single brought him even with former Ace Jake Elmore, who reached the 31-game mark in 2012. Vargas also lead the Aces offensive if a 3-for-5 day, all of which were singles. Neftalí Feliz received the start from manager Greg Gross and went 5.0 innings, striking out six Oklahoma City batters, and only allowed four hits, but received the no-decision for his efforts.

Streaking: Ildemaro Vargas has hit in 31 consecutive games, good for the longest hit streak in the Pacific Coast League and tie for the second longest in the PCL in the last 10 seasons. During the streak, he is batting .375, (53-for-138), with 22 runs scored, 11 doubles, 14 RBI and an OBP of .433. There have only been five players in Aces history with streaks of 20+ games. Jake Elmore (31, 2012), Ildemaro Vargas (31, 2018), Tony Abreu (24, 2011), Chris Owings (23, 2013), and Ketel Marte (22, 2017). In 2017, Ketel Marte went 37-for-98, .378, with nine 2B, three 3B, one HR and 16 RBI from April 29 through May 22.

Streaking Extended: Since 2009, only two players in the PCL have recorded hit streaks of 30 or more. Jake Elmore (Reno) has the longest with 31 set in 2012 and Anderson Hernandez (OKC) had 30 in 2011. Joe DiMaggio, then an 18-year old outfielder with the San Francisco Seals, established a new Pacific Coast League record by hitting in 61 consecutive games in 1933.

Good Hops: On this day in 1972, the second game of the Midland Cubs and Amarillo Giants minor league doubleheader is postponed when thousands of grasshoppers begin appearing everywhere at Christensen Stadium. The massive clusters of insects, who swarmed from their nests behind the center field wall after the ballpark's lights were turned on, made play impossible when infielders couldn't see their outfielders through the hordes of fluttering invaders.

Deven's Rehab: Deven Marrero has made four starts with the Aces on his way to recovery. The 27-year-old is batting .250 (4-for-16) with a double and one RBI. His OBP is .333 and has five total bases. This season with the D-backs, Marrero has played in 49 games and is batting .167 (13-for-78).

Once Friends, Now Foes: When the Aces head to Las Vegas next week they will likely meet former long-time Aces, Zach Borenstein and Jack Reinheimer. Reinheimer played in 311 games in an Aces uniform, third-most all-time. Borenstein appeared in 280 games for the Biggest Little City, one slot behind Reinheimer for fourth-most all-time. Following the away series in Las Vegas, Reno will host division rival Sacramento. Cesar Puello will be in the outfield for the River Cats after signing a Minor League Free Agent contract on August 3rd, 2018. Puello was released by the Arizona Diamondbacks on August first following 73 games where he hit .317 with six home runs and 33 RBI.

Looking for Blood: In conjunction with United Blood Services, the Aces are hosting their second annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive at Greater Nevada Field. On August, 15th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., all donors can receive Aces swag and save lives in the process.

On Deck: 2019 season tickets are NOW ON SALE beginning at just $96! Don't wait to reserve your seats for the Biggest Little Show on Grass. Visit the Ticket Sales Kiosk behind section 105 for more information.
