Memphis' Garcia Secures Player of the Month
August 6, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Following a vote of Pacific Coast League field managers, Memphis Redbirds outfielder Adolis Garcia has been elected Minor League Baseball's PCL Player of the Month for July. Garcia, along with winners from other leagues, will be presented with an award from Minor League Baseball in recognition of his performance last month.
In 25 games, Garcia posted the highest OPS (1.145) and slugging percentages (.771) in the League, while recording a PCL-best 19 extra-base hits, 10 home runs and 74 total bases. Garcia hit .354 (34-for-96) in the month, drove in 25 runs and scored 21 runs.
The Cuba native had 12 multi-hit games in July, including at least one hit in each of the final 10 games of the month, the beginning of a career-best 14-game hitting streak. He had a season-best four hits, while tying his season-high with three runs, in a win on July 21 against Colorado Springs. Five days later, July 26 at Salt Lake, Garcia had one of the most prolific offensive games in Memphis' history. He mashed three home runs, one of which was a grand slam, and drove in eight. It was only the seventh three-homer game in Redbirds history and the sixth in the PCL this season. That performance helped Garcia earn Player of the Week honors for the period of July 23-29, a six-game stretch in which he led all players in professional baseball in home runs (6), extra-base hits (11) and total bases (36).
Garcia has spent the entire season in Memphis, hitting .269 (94-for-350) with 21 home runs and a team-best 67 RBI and 186 total bases. The 25-year-old is in his second professional season in the United States after signing with the St. Louis Cardinals in February 2017 after playing five seasons in Cuba and one in Japan. He split last year between Double-A Springfield and Memphis and batted .290 (129-for-445) with 15 home runs and 65 RBI in 124 games. Garcia, who was named the Cardinals Minor League Player of the Month for July, is the recipient of a Minor League Baseball Player of the Month award for the first time.
