Mills Earns PCL Pitcher of the Week Accolades

August 6, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - Right-handed starter Alec Mills was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for the period of July 30-Aug. 5, the league announced today.

Mills, 26, faced the PCL's top offensive team in the Salt Lake Bees on Aug. 1 and was brilliant as he spun 6.0 perfect frames. The righty threw 53 of his 75 pitches for strikes while fanning four in the outing. The perfect game was spoiled by the bullpen in the eighth, but Iowa still came away with a two-hit shutout against the Bees.

This start immediately followed a brief call up to Chicago in which Mills made his Cubs big league debut after joining the organization via trade from Kansas City in 2017. Mills spun 2.0 flawless frames in St. Louis and struck out two on July 27.

This is the fourth minor league pitcher of the week honor for Mills as he was a two-time Carolina League Pitcher of the Week with Wilmington in 2015, and earned Texas League weekly accolades with Northwest Arkansas on June 19, 2016. Mills is the first Iowa Cub to take the award since Jen-Ho Tseng on Aug. 23, 2017.

Mills has been Iowa's most consistent starter in 2018, logging nine quality starts. He totals a 5-10 record with a 4.53 ERA (55ER/109.1IP) through 20 starts with the I-Cubs.

The Tennessee native was originally selected by the Royals in the 22nd round of the 2012 draft out of the University of Tennessee-Martin. Mills made his major league debut with Kansas City in 2016 and has a career 8.44 ERA (5ER/5.1IP) through four major league contests.

Iowa faces the Las Vegas 51s tonight at Principal Park for a scheduled 7:08 first pitch. Promotions include Dog Days and Dollar Hot Dogs. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
