Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES - The Iowa Cubs (29-28) out-hit the Round Rock Express (31-27) 11-7 on Thursday night at Principal Park, but fell short as the Express ultimately came out on top, 8-5. Mark Zagunis and Jeimer Candelario both tallied a hit for Iowa in their Triple-A debuts - a single for Zagunis and a pair of doubles for Candelario.
Rob Zastryzny (1-1) took the bump for Iowa and was tagged with three runs early in the game, but followed with three scoreless innings. He finished the night allowing five runs on five hits and sat down six Round Rock batters on strikes through 5.1 innings of work.
Round Rock struck in the first with a leadoff single by Drew Robinson followed by a pair of walks that loaded the bags for the Express. Trever Adams capitalized, clearing the bases with a three-RBI, stand-up triple to deep center field.
Joey Gallo added to Round Rock's lead in the top of the fifth with a solo blast deep over the right-field wall, putting the Express up 4-0.
Candelario kicked off the Iowa rally in the bottom of the frame with a leadoff double to center field for his first hit as an I-Cub. John Andreoli followed with a bunt single, putting runners on the corners for Iowa. Kristopher Negrón then ripped a two-RBI triple to left field, pulling the I-Cubs within two.
The Express added another run in the sixth thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Doug Bernier, scoring Adams who had doubled earlier in the inning. Iowa responded in the bottom of the inning with four straight singles, including a RBI-single to left by Juan Perez, to make the score 5-3 in favor of Round Rock.
A three-run ninth stretched the lead for the Express, but the I-Cubs did not go down without a fight. Candelario knocked his second hit of the night, a double to right field, to get on base. Andreoli drew a walk and Negrón followed with a RBI-double of his own. A ground out by Munenori Kawasaki allowed Andreoli to score, but the I-Cubs fell short, 8-5. Negron, Candelario and Perez all tabbed multi-hit games, including a three-RBI game for Negrón.
Nick Martinez (6-4) tossed 5.1 innings for Round Rock, nabbing the win after retiring nine batters in a row and striking out two.
Iowa and Round Rock will play game two of the four-game series Friday night at Principal Park. First pitch is set for 7:08 p.m. with Friday Night Fireworks following the game. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
