New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Chris Reed fired seven innings of one-hit ball, and the Zephyrs scored five times in the sixth inning to defeat the Omaha Storm Chasers, 5-1 on Thursday night.
New Orleans has won six of its last seven games, and the Z's pitching staff owns a 1.34 ERA through the first eight games in June.
With the game scoreless in the sixth, the Zephyrs erupted for five runs. Robert Andino was hit by a pitch to open the inning, and one out later, Destin Hood tripled off the center field wall to break the ice.
Hood scored on a slow grounder to third by Matt Juengel, who raced to third on a throwing error by Hunter Dozier. Tomas Telis followed with a single past a drawn-in infield to score Juengel, and Carlos Corporan and Brady Shoemaker capped the rally with back-to-back run-scoring doubles.
The outburst snapped a streak of 24 consecutive scoreless innings for the Zephyrs with Reed on the mound. The left-hander has allowed just two runs on 10 hits in 25 innings over his last four starts, good for a 0.72 ERA and .108 opponents' batting average.
Reed (1-2) won for the first time in 11 career Triple-A starts, limiting Omaha to one hit - a leadoff single by Balbino Fuenmayor in the third. He struck out four without issuing a walk in a season-high seven innings.
Raudel Lazo chipped in a scoreless eighth inning before Brett Eibner broke up the shutout bid with a two-out RBI double in the ninth against Cody Ege.
Hood turned in his second straight multi-hit effort and has hit with at least one RBI and one run scored in four of his last five games. Corporan collected a pair of doubles, and through his first nine games with New Orleans, six of his seven hits have gone for extra bases.
Christian Binford (1-3) was charged with five runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss.
The series continues on Friday at 7 p.m.
