Iowa Cubs News Release
COLUMBUS, OH - The Iowa Cubs (28-39) evened the series with a 9-4 victory over the Columbus Clippers (30-38), Friday at Huntington Park.
Justin Steele had another good outing, tossing four innings while allowing just one earned run on two hits and striking out four. The lefty had a little trouble with his control, walking three batters in his four innings of work, but was able to work around it and keep Iowa in the game.
The offense gave him some run support in the second inning, when Trayce Thompson hit his tenth home run of the year, giving the I-Cubs an early 2-0 lead. Although the Clippers scored two runs in the bottom of the third, Iowa struck back with four runs of their own in the fourth inning to regain the lead.
Sergio Alcántara, Andrew Romine and David Bote hit three doubles in a row, all with two outs to bring their lead to 6-2. Jordan Luplow hit a two-run shot off of Scott Effross to cut the Clippers deficit in half, but Iowa added two more in the sixth and one in the ninth to take a 9-4 lead over Columbus.
Ryan Lawlor, Tommy Nance and Tony Cingrani would keep the Clippers off the board, combining to throw 3.1 scoreless innings, evening the series at two games apiece.
