Iowa Cubs News Release
The Iowa Cubs fell to the Omaha Royals 5-4 in a rainy contest Sunday afternoon at Principal Park.
Iowa took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Sam Fuld led off with a walk, Darwin Barney singled and Brad Snyder plated Fuld. The Cubs held the lead until the seventh inning when Kila Ka'aihue scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ed Lucas. Ka'aihue reached on a walk, which was his third of the game.
Bryan LaHair of Iowa quickly responded with a solo shot to lead off the Cubs' half of the seventh and regain the lead, 2-1. It was LaHairs first home run with Iowa.
Iowa and Omaha played through rain showers beginning in the fourth inning before the game was delayed in the top of the eighth with one out. In the top of the eight inning Omaha scored two runs to take a 3-2 lead. Irving Falu singled, followed by a Mike Aviles walk. The duo was driven in on David Lough's single before the delay. After a 55-minute delay play was resumed with runners on first and third. Miller hit a sacrifice fly to score Ka'aihue and extend Omaha's lead 4-2.
However, the Cubs rallied in the bottom half of the eighth inning to tie the game. Barney, who was 3-for-4, singled and designated hitter Bobby Scales doubled. Snyder plated Barney on a sacrifice fly to left field and Marquez Smith singled home Scales to knot the game 4-4.
The back-and-forth game would not end there as Omaha responded with a rally of their own in the top of the ninth. Lucas led off with a single. He later scored when pinch-hitter Marc Maddox singled to reclaim the Omaha lead for good, 5-4.
Thomas Diamond pitched 6.1 innings for Iowa, allowing one run on four hits. He did not factor in the decision. Blake Parker (1-1, 1.59) was tagged with the loss throwing 1.2 innings and allowing one run on three hits. Omaha's Victor Marte (2-0, 4.38) claimed the win.
Iowa travels to New Orleans tomorrow to face the Zephyrs. Righty Casey Coleman (1-2, 4.38) will oppose New Orleans' Jorge Sosa (1-1, 6.00). The Cubs return home Friday for a four-game series against the Oklahoma City RedHawks.
