Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - Omaha reliever Carlos Rosa, considered one of the top pitching prospects for the Kansas City Royals over the past several seasons, has been traded by Kansas City to the Arizona Diamondbacks. In exchange, the Royals organization receives another prospect in shortstop Rey Navarro, who will be assigned to high-A Wilmington.
The 25-year old Rosa pitched in just nine games for Kansas City over the past two seasons, posting a 3.21 ERA with no decisions and one save. In 2008, Rosa saw his first action for Triple-A Omaha as a starter, going 4-3 with a 4.09 ERA in 11 starts.
He was converted to the bullpen last year and was just 2-8 with a 4.56 ERA, but led the O-Royals with seven saves. After a rocky month of May (10.43 ERA), he rebounded to compile a 2.98 ERA from June through the end of the Triple-A season and was recalled by Kansas City in September. With the parent club last year, he posted his first big league save and owned a 3.38 ERA in seven appearances.
Rosa opened this season back in Omaha's bullpen and was 2-1 with a 3.65 ERA in six relief outings, blowing his only save opportunity. The native of the Dominican Republic was rated by Baseball America as Kansas City's 13th-best prospect entering this season, slipping a bit from his ranking in that publication in each of the previous two years (#8 in 2009 and #7 in 2008). Rosa will join the Diamondbacks' Triple-A club at Reno.
Navarro is a switch-hitting shortstop with an excellent defensive reputation. A 20-year old who was the Diamondbacks' third round selection in the 2007 draft out of a high school in Puerto Rico, he was rated by Baseball America as Arizona's #12 prospect prior to this season and was also tabbed as Best Defensive Infielder in the D-Backs system.
He owns a .257 average in 272 career games over four Minor League seasons. So far this year, Navarro was hitting .241 with one home run and seven RBI in 19 games for high-A Visalia.
The Royals next game at Rosenblatt Stadium is Monday, May 3 at 6:35 p.m. when the Oklahoma City RedHawks visit to begin a four-game series and eight-game homestand. Rotella's Italian Bakery presents $1 hot dog night - Hebrew National hot dogs are just $1.
