Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
Despite a two-run lead going into the top of the ninth, for the second straight game, the Kannapolis Intimidators lost in extra innings, the 12th, to the Lakewood BlueClaws by the score of 9-7.
Trailing 5-4 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, with one out and a runner on, Juan Silverio hit a blast to center to give the Intimidators (7-15) a one-run lead. Silverio had a season-high four hits on the night. The next batter, Daniel Wagner tripled and was scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Saladino to give the Intimidators a 6-4 lead going into the top of the ninth inning.
In the ninth, after JR Ballinger worked a clean eighth inning, Jiwan James, who extended his franchise-long hitting streak to 23 games with a five-hit night, grounded out, but a double and a walk later there were two on with one down. Ballinger then struck out Jonathan Singleton, but with two outs, after a walk loaded the bases, Stephen Batts hit a double, scoring two and having the final runner thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
After two scoreless innings for both Zach Piccola (0-4), the game was tied going into the 12th inning. Singleton walked, and with one down, scored on a triple by Batts. Batts then scored on a successful suicide squeeze, executed by Jeremy Barnes to take a 9-7 lead. Behind Justin Beal (2-0) who threw the final two innings of the game, the BlueClaws (15-6) went on to win by that score.
Cameron Bayne started the game for the Intimidators and ended up going seven innings despite allowing five runs, all earned on nine hits. He allowed a two-run home run to Singleton in the third and a two-run home run to Alan Schoenberger in the fifth. For the BluClaws, Trevor May took a no decision as he allowed three runs, two earned in five with three walks and nine strikeouts. May allowed three runs in the third after Ian Gac hit a solo home run, Silverio had an RBI-single and the third run scored on an error.
The loss is the sixth straight in extra innings for the Intimidators this season and they have lost four straight overall. Justin Collop will look to continue his success and turn around the fortune of the Intimidators on Saturday at 7:05 pm. Collop will be opposed by Colby Shreve. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for a chance to win free Chick-fil-A for a year at 6:30 pm.
