Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Charleston, SC - The Augusta GreenJackets scored seven unanswered runs to pull away to a 9-1 win over the Charleston RiverDogs on Friday night - Augusta's first win of the series.
With a 2-1 lead entering the 6th inning, the GreenJackets scored five times on just three hits - with Ryan Cavan's single the only RBI in the frame. Evan Crawford and Ryan Lollis scored on wild pitches while Lollis and Nick Liles reached on errors in the inning that resulted in runs. In all, Charleston committed four errors in the game and the RiverDogs have committed a total of eight miscues in the three games thus far in the series.
Augusta extended their lead with single runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Nick Liles drove home a run in the eighth with an RBI single while Tommy Joseph scored on a wild pitch in the ninth to grow the Augusta lead to eight runs in the ninth.
The GreenJackets scored first for the third straight night, getting a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Ydwin Villegas' leadoff walk was followed by Crawford's double to put runners at second and third with no one out. Cavan grounded out to score one while Liles' sacrifice fly made it a 2-0 Augusta lead.
The RiverDogs struck back in their half of the fifth, getting a run on a Slade Heathcott two-out RBI single that came on an 0-2 pitch from Jeremy Toole. After taking second on the throw to the plate, Heathcott was left stranded at second to end the inning and Charleston would get no closer.
Toole (3-3) got his first win since May 28th with a six-inning effort, allowing just one run on five hits and a walk while striking out three. Brett Marshall (1-1) allowed six runs, but just two earned while taking the loss for the RiverDogs.
The GreenJackets will send Brian Irving (5-2, 4.07) to the mound in an attempt to even the series at two games apiece. Charleston counters with lefty Josh Romanski (4-2, 3.28). First pitch from Charleston will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
