Inland Empire Ties Game in Ninth on Gabe Matthews' Homer But San Jose Wins in Ten

San Jose, CA - The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino trailed 5-1 entering the eighth inning against San Jose on Saturday night but pushed the game to an extra inning before falling 6-5. Gabe Matthews smoked a two-run homer, his first as a pro, in the ninth to tie the contest 5-5 but San Jose (50-27) got notched its first walk-off win of the year on Carter Williams' gamewinning RBI single.

The 66ers (39-37) took an early lead when the, with two outs, Gabe Matthews doubled to left with two outs versus SJ starter Carson Ragsdale. Carson Matthews followed by ripping a RBI single to left for his first pro hit and a 1-0 lead. The Giants tied the game in the next half inning and took a 2-1 lead on a RBI double from Jimmy Glowenke against IE starter John Swanda. The Giants added a run in the fifth on Luis Toribio's solo homer, his fourth of the year and a two-run homer by Jairo Pomares' in the seventh making it 5-1; it was Pomares' 11th homer of the season as he finished the game 3-for-4. Inland Empire took advantage of miscues in the eighth to get back in the contest as Gabe Matthews reached on an error, Carson Matthews walked, and Gustavo Campero laid down a sac bunt but reached on a throwing error to load the bags. Elijah Greene then drew a bases loaded walk making it 5-2 and two batters later another run scored on D'Shawn Knowles' RBI groundout. Trailing by two runs entering the ninth, Jose Guzman rifled a double to wall with one out setting up Gabe Matthews' heroics as he launched a Clay Helvey (3-3) offering over the wall in center to tie the game. Emilker Guzman(2-3) got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth to push the contest to extra frames. In the tenth the Sixers had runners at second and third with no outs but Helvey sandwiched an unproductive bunt between a pair of strikeouts to escape the jam unscathed. In the bottom of the tenth Carter Williams punched a game-winning single to right off Emilker Guzman as the Giants improved to 2-3 three in extra-inning games while the Sixers fell to 3-2. Luis Matos had a four-hit game for the Giants. San Jose has taken four of the five games in the six-game set. San Jose out-hit the 66ers 15-6.
