Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Jose, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino fell behind early at Excite Ballpark in San Jose on Friday and could not overcome the excellent start of Giants' righty Prelander Berroa as the Sixers succumbed 8-3. The Giants (49-27) have taken the three of the first four games in a six-game set as the reigning Low-A West Pitcher of the Week struck out ten Inland Empire batters with no walks over five innings.
The Giants took control in the second when Inland Empire starter Jack Kochanowicz (3-2) hit a batter and walked two more to load the bags with two outs. The righty got ahead of San Jose RF Carter Williams 0-2, but the left-handed batter jumped on an offering driving a bases-clearing three-run double to right for a 3-0 advantage. Berroa (4-3) retired the first six batters he faced, five via the strikeout to run his consecutive batters retired streak to 22. Inland Empire (39-36) DH Gabe Matthews led off the third with an infield single, his first hit as a professional to break the string. Trailing 4-0 entering the fifth, the Sixers did scratch a run against Berroa when he hit Matthews with a pitch. With the runner at second base following a wild pitch, Elijah Greene shot a ball over the third base bag for a RBI double making it 4-1. The Giants answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth getting a two-run triple from Marco Luciano, an RBI groundball from Jairo Pomares and RBI double from Jimmy Glowenke for a 8-1 lead and chased Kochanowicz from the game. Jerryell Rivera and Garrett Lawson did hold the Giants scoreless over the final 3.2 innings. The Sixers did get run back in the eighth when Greene singled, his second hit of the night, and came home on Jeremy Arocho's ball that was lost in the lights and fell for a RBI double. Cade Cabinness launched a solo homer in the ninth against SJ righty Brooks Crawford to make it 8-3; the homer was the first as a pro for Cabbiness in only his second game. Cabbiness also had a single and is 3-for-6 through his first two games.
The series continues Saturday at 6:00 pm. The contest can be heard live on 66ers.com.
