March 20, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Columbia Inferno used two goals by D'Arcy McConvey to knock off the Gwinnett Gladiators 4-1 on Sunday night in front of 5,203 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
Columbia took a 1-0 lead half way through the first period on a goal by Matt Ulwelling. Left wide open in the slot, Ulwelling was able to pull Gladiators netminder Adam Berkhoel out of the net and slide the puck into the back of the net. D'Arcy McConvey and Mike Minard added the assists on the tally at 10:16 of the first period.
Mike Stathopoulos equalized the contest with the Gladiators only goal of the game 3:09 into the second period shoveling home a centering pass in the slot from Cam Brown. Lane Manson tapped the puck into the neutral zone where Brown muscled after it down the left wing wall flipping it to Stathopoulos in the slot for the tally.
D'Arcy McConvey's first goal of the night proved to be the game winner less than 2 minutes after Stathopoulos' goal. McConvey beat Berkhoel on a 2-on-1 break with Brad Ralph at the 5:14 mark of the second period.
Columbia extended its lead to 3-1 with McConvey's second goal of the night 9 minutes into the second period. Ralph and John Longo added the assists on the goal for the Inferno.
Eric Boulton rounded out the scoring for the Inferno with an empty net goal at 19:14 of the final period whipping the puck in from the Gladiators blue line. Matt Ulwelling and Trevor Demmans added the assist on the goal for the Inferno.
Gwinnett went 0-for-5 on the power play while the league's best penalty killing unit was perfect shorthanded, killing off all three Columbia power plays in the loss. Berkhoel made 18 saves for Gwinnett in the loss.
