Checkers ink deal with Augusta

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Charlotte Checkers announced today that they have traded defenseman Brian Escobedo and future considerations to the Augusta Lynx for Regan Darby and the rights to veteran defenseman Chris Hajt. The announcement was made by Checkers head coach Derek Wilkinson.

The 27-year-old Hajt made his NHL debut with the Edmonton Oilers during the 2000-01 season. Hailing from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the 6'3" 206-pound veteran defenseman began his professional career with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League (AHL). Hajt split the 2003-04 season with the Washington Capitols and the Portland Pirates of the AHL where he notched 3 goals, 13 assists, and 55 penalty minutes.

Darby, a native of Estevan, Saskatchewan, was selected by the Vancouver Canucks in round 4, #90 overall in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. So far this season, the 6'2" 200-pound defenseman has tallied 8 points and 216 penalty minutes with the Las Vegas Wranglers and the Augusta Lynx of the ECHL.

An acquisition from the ECHL's Mississippi Sea Wolves, Escobedo leaves the Checkers having tallied 6 goals and 8 assists for 14 points in 28 games. The 6'0" 170-pound native of Bayside, New York, had a goal and an assist against his former team on February 18, 2005.
