Gators swim by Salmon Kings 2-1

Lafayette, LA- The Louisiana IceGators scored two goals by their special teams and despite the fewest shots on goal in team history, defeated the Victoria Salmon Kings 2-1 Sunday afternoon at the Cajundome. The victory ends a 7 game winless streak at home.

     Despite a total of eight power plays in the first period, the initial 20 minutes was low scoring with the Gators leading 1-0. At 4:30, while killing a penalty, Pascal Pelletier stole the puck from former San Jose Shark Mark Smith. Putting on a burst of speed Pelletier walked in alone on Jamie McCaig and lifted a wrist shot, blocker side, into the net. It was Pelletier's 10th goal of the season and 1st shorthanded goal of his pro career.

     Both teams scored power plpay goals in the 2nd period to make the score 2-1 after 40 minutes. At 11:04, Scott Turner continued his red hot play scoring on a rebound on the doorstep in front of Nathan Marsters. Turner scoring his 12th goal of the season and 7th point in two games this weekend. The Gators took the lead back at 13:03. Wes Mason scored his team best 28th goal of the year, scoring on a backhander off the rebound for a 2-1 Gator lead.

    In the 3rd period Victoria outshot the Gators 19-1 but Nathan Marsters made the one goal lead hold up for a 2-1 win.With the victory, Louisiana's record is now 21-35-6, 48 points and 5th place in the South The Gators were outshot 37-13. Power plays were 1-8 for the Gators and 1-11 for the Salmon Kings. The one shot on goal in the period and 13 for the game both set new marks for fewest shots by the team.

The IceGators next game is Wednesday, March 24, when the Gators take on the PeeDee Pride at 7:05pm CST. The game will be available on 960am "The Gator", on the internet at www.icegators.com and a videocast is available through the B2 Network and the team website.
