Indy Uses Three-Run Eighth To Defeat Red Sox 6-3
June 20, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Third baseman Jose Hernandez, catcher Humberto Cota and second baseman Luis Ordaz came up with key RBI in a three-run bottom of the eighth and Indianapolis held on for a thrilling 6-3 win over Pawtucket in front 9,117 Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field.
The Indians improve to a Triple-A best 43-28 overall and 24-13 at home, while the Red Sox fall to 31-38 on the season at 15-17 on the road. Thursday will be the Tribe's 66th consecutive day atop the International League's West Division.
The contest went down to the wire for the third straight day after Indianapolis scored a pair of 4-3 victories in games one and two of the series. The Indians have also won nine of their last 10 contests at Victory Field.
Tribe SS Brian Bixler opened the big frame with a walk, moved to third on RF Yurendell de Caster's single through the right side and eventually scored on Hernandez's groundout up the middle. De Caster raced to the dish moments later on Cota's base knock to center, while 1B Brad Eldred was hit by a pitch and eventually came plateward on Ordaz's suicide squeeze.
Indians RHP Franquelis Osoria (1.0 IP), who entered in the ninth with two runners on and no one out, needed just five pitches to get three outs and his sixth save of the season. The first batter he faced smashed a line drive at Eldred, who stepped on the bag for an unassisted double play.
Indianapolis RHP Mark Corey (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 SO), who tossed the eighth, was credited with the win in his first decision of 2007. Pawtucket RHP Bryan Corey (1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB), who also hurled the same inning, fell to 2-4 with the loss.
Tribe LF Michael Ryan, who finished 3-for-4, fell a double short of the cycle. He led off the third by smoking his third roundtripper of the season and opened the fifth by blasting a triple off the center-field wall.
Indianapolis pulled ahead with two scores in the fifth after the clubs traded early runs. CF Luis Matos brought Ryan home with a single through the left side, while C Einar Diaz jogged home on a double play with the bases loaded and no outs.
Pawtucket responded with a two spot in the seventh to tie the affair. 3B Chad Spann highlighted the inning with a two-run single to plate 1B Jeff Bailey and C Kevin Cash.
Neither starter -- Indianapolis LHP Michael Tejera (6.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) or Pawtucket LHP Jon Lester (5.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO) -- figured in the decision.
The two clubs wrap up the four-game series on Thursday at 7 p.m. LHP Kason Gabbard is scheduled to start for the Red Sox, while LHP Shane Youman is expected to get the nod for the Indians.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
Indians players and coaches will hold their annual Youth Baseball Clinic at 5:15 p.m. Children 14-and-under (with a game ticket) are eligible to participate. The gates will open at 5 p.m.
