Indianapolis Indians News Release
TOLEDO, OHIO - The Indianapolis Indians offense erupted for 14 hits and outslugged the Toledo Mud Hens on Tuesday night, 9-6. Four different Indy batters collected multi-hit games in the victory.
Indianapolis (2-3) wasted no time and plated three runs in the top of the first. Ke'Bryan Hayes started the rally with a walk, and then scored when rehabbing Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Elias Diaz doubled. Will Craig sent Diaz home with his third home run of the year, a blast that easily cleared the right-center field wall.
Daz Cameron led off the bottom of the first with a home run for Toledo (3-2) to put the Mud Hens on the board, and they drew closer in the third when Cameron scored again on Victor Reyes' sacrifice fly.
The Indians offense then drove four runs across in the fourth. Kevin Kramer scored on a wild pitch with one out, but it was Cole Tucker who delivered the big hit of the frame. The Tribe shortstop doubled into the right-field corner, sending both Bryan Reynolds and Eric Wood home. The inning was capped when Hayes blooped a single to center field to score Tucker.
Toledo quickly cut the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Harold Castro scored on a wild pitch, Cameron's groundout forced Bobby Wilson home, and Danny Woodrow tripled to plate Jacob Robson. The Indy advantage was just 7-5 after four innings.
Indy pushed across another run after the lead was sliced to one, as Patrick Kivlehan doubled home Reynolds. Further insurance was added in the top of the ninth when Eric Wood hit his second homer of the season to left field. The solo shot hit the foul pole in left field, and it gave the game its final margin of 9-6.
The two teams combined to use 11 pitchers in the contest. Geoff Hartlieb (1-0) was the first man out of the bullpen for Indianapolis and earned the win. Kyle Funkhouser (0-1) was tagged for five runs and was handed the loss. Montana DuRapau worked the ninth and picked up his second save of the campaign.
Indianapolis can get to .500 with a triumph on Wednesday night when they conclude the road trip in Toledo. The Tribe will celebrate Opening Night at Victory Field on Thursday against the Charlotte Knights at 7:05 p.m.
